Tell me what to play and why - deck recommendation

I like [Elsha](https://www.moxfield.com/decks/tj910qUf9Uq-Iibp40QfKw) a lot. She is at the core a proactive deck with several different combo lines. The main combo is Elsha, [[Sensei's Divining Top]], and a permanent that reduces the cost of spells by 1 like [[Helm of Awakening]] or [[Birgi, God of Storytelling]]. With the three in play, you activate the draw ability of Top and then cast the Top for free (or use floating mana from Birgi) off the top of your deck using Elsha. This lets you draw your deck. The deck also has Underworld Breach combo lines and runs the Spellseeker combo line to set up Breach wins as well. Elsha is fun because just her existing on the battlefield can be an absolute nightmare for your opponents. Having access to cast noncreature cards on the top of your library at instant speed can lead to some extremely explosive turns and gross card advantage.

This is very much what I'm looking for. Thank you for your explanation and for the link.

Neko_Shogun

I helped my brother build Elsha Top, the deck is very strong and he´s had a lot of fun so you can´t go wrong with this recommendation :D

Joking101

This is very hard. The operative component that gets decks to “B-Tier” and above is the ability to leverage the best win condition in the format, Consult+Oracle. Given this, you’re going to be looking at mostly control-esque decks. Additionally, since it’s pretty much strictly wrong not to play Consult+Oracle in blue/black, there won’t be a deck with both of those colours in it. I think the most powerful deck other than Godo that doesn’t play Oracle+Consult is probably Kinnan, Korvold, or Gitrog. Unless you consider Food Chain decks acceptable, in which case First Sliver Food Chain. You can also look at Urza, Selvala, Winota, and Chulane as possible options.

Coy0teStarrk88

I feel like every deck that has that Oracle combo plays very similar way. I might be undereducated in cEDH to have such opinion but I'd like to play something which is not present in every single table at least twice and plays the same cards and the same style. What would be your 1st suggestion if I'm not going to rule out the Oracle combo?

Joking101

If by “plays very similarly” you mean “aims to win the game with the same combo”, then absolutely. I listed a bunch of decks with more unique or interesting lines of play. The simple truth about cEDH is that the majority of strong decks play similar cards because they mostly are the best cards. There are unique decks that are cEDH viable, but not as many as you might prefer. To answer your question, what would I suggest if you do use Consult+Oracle, again, unfortunately, I don’t have a very good answer. Choosing a deck is a very personal decision. If you haven’t seen it, [the cEDH Decklist Database](https://cedh-decklist-database.com/) is an excellent resource for most viable decks. You’ll notice that almost every single deck with blue and black has Consult+Oracle. I’d highly recommend you take a look at some of the options to get a sense for what decks you’d be interested in playing. There’s a lot of cool decks! The deck that uses Tainted Pact and Demonic Consultation in the most “layered” way, that is to say, doesn’t use them exclusively in the Oracle combo, is Food Chain. You cast Consult naming Food Chain and exile one of the the necessary “Cast From Exile” creatures on your way to it. First Sliver is the best FC deck at the moment, with UFC (Ukkima/Cazur) as the close #2. I noticed in another comment you expressed interest in Elsha. Take a look at Chulane as well, it’s my personal favourite deck and it has unique lines that you might enjoy. Hopefully this helps!

Brontsdog

I think that's a common perception from people new to the format or outside of it. A lot of the best decks may win the same way but they leverage interesting and divergent strategies to get to that point. Thoracle may end the game but the card that actually won it for you is the sylvan library, dockside, ad naus, etc that you cast earlier.

TLGCarnage

There are a lot of decks that look to use that combo to win but don't arrive to playing it safely the same way. 5c stax should run it, as should yuriko, but they play very differently.

Batro-

First that comes to mind is Urza polytyrant second is Winota

Bread_it_

If you want a change in mentality from godo, who is 0 interaction, all speed and much stax, you will want some deck with a lot of interaction, card advantage and no stax. I think some sort of thasios/tymna midrange (look at the cedh database) would be in your ballpark.

Psuedodactyl

Winota!

Templerschaf_MTG

I like \[\[The First Sliver\]\] a lot. Ist a lot of fun to rush from 0 to win. You can check the primer in the database here [Food Chain Sliver](https://www.moxfield.com/decks/DujxA8PlG0eTQZ_hawsTmQ/primer) . When budget is not a criterion, then you can have a lot of fun with it. or proxy if your playgroupe ist ok with that.

[[Zur]] is a god among men. He’s very “midrange” as he tries to win around turn 4/5 (from what I’ve played and seen). As a commander, he’s pretty linear but straight forward. Consult and Oracle. There’s also lots of variations. You can play Shimmer which is an artifact storm deck (considered to currently be the best version). The simple consult (I was on this for about a year before switching to shimmer). There’s Zur Stax which is solid on a budget and can be devastating to more color intensive decks at the table. There’s also one that just spams card draw that seems to be popular at the budgeted tables. The one serious issue with Zur is he’s slower than most decks as he’s a big part of the deck. (You can win without him, it’s just a bit slower.) Overall, Zur is easy enough to learn and will capture your heart: 10/10 would recommend.

Right in the feels. My first cEDH deck that wasn't really cEDH (started off as more of a control/toolbox build) until I had honed it into a consult list. My only 100% no proxy list for the longest time. I did eventually go the Shimmer route myself, and though I don't play the deck often anymore (just too many new things coming along and I'm a habitual brewer) I can't bring myself to ever take it apart. Edit: Getting my hands on the Judge promo version is a fond memory as well.

Cbone06

The same thing literally happened to me! I played stax because I couldn’t afford fast mana or tainted pact and then I slowly built the deck into consult and then recently I gave shimmer a try. I love the deck so much, though sadly, I am slowly drifting away from it. I’ve been on it for 2 years now and I like trying out other decks. I’ve been debating switching to something else for a little while now but it’s painful to think about taking a part Zur even if it’s for Esper farm.

Izlain

I've found myself building decks that are sans-blue just so I have to come up with different wincons. Latest project is \[\[Sythis, Harvest's Hand\]\] from MH2, and the one before that was \[\[Dina, Soul Steeper\]\] which leverages the newer chain of smog combo but also has hulk lines and \[\[Exquisite Blood\]\]. I honestly don't see another Esper partner combo or single commander that makes me want to build it. Zur ***is*** Esper.

Cbone06

Yeah I’d concur, Zur *is* Esper, nothing comes close. There’s the Tymna/Sakashima/Malcom farm decks and they seem neat.

Izlain

Yeah I guess I'd consider Tymna/Malcolm the most if I didn't already have a Tymna/Rograkh list.

Cbone06

Can you drop a deck list for Rog/Tymna? I was thinking about building it a while back

Lovely list. How else do you win besides beats? That’s what I could never figure out.

Izlain

It's turbo ad naus. I cover it pretty well in the primer.

My favorite deck of all time is Tymna Jeska Turbo Naus. I’ve played a lot of different decks in the past, but Zur, The Enchanter was my main deck, since the Doomsday Storm build, long before the term „cEDH“ existed. But after oracle was released I got pretty tired of the deck. I played it nearly never, until I changed colors and commanders to Tymna Jeska and now I enjoy the deck more than ever before. It‘s so crazy how the Turbo Naus core acts behind those two partner commanders. You have always a plan B-D in the Commander Zone. And a outlet for infinite mana. And a draw engine. Breach Lines. Naus after 18 life gained by Serra‘s Ascendant. Even if a game is not in my favor, everyone I play the deck, I feel relevant to the table, thanks to Jeska.

build-a-deck

I have a godo deck and my second deck is chulane. It’s about as opposite as you can get, and I love it. Check out the iCameo primer. Basically you use shrieking drake to draw your library, get infinite mana along the way, and finale of devastation for a lot

ChittyChittyChungus

Most U decks that are tier are going to be running Thassa's oracle as a wincon, even ones without B for demonic Consultation/tainted pact. So I would go with the non U options if you're that opposed. Winota is killer: Stax deck that makes up for RWs lack of card advantage and ramp with Winota's ability. She basically vomits stax on the board at a high rate and thanks to weird interactions in the rules, certain pieces can't be responded to after they come out. For instance, if you drop a [[thalia, guardian of thraben]] off her trigger, the tax is immediately applied with no pass in priority to your opponents. Kaalia is also extremely good. I think there was a recentish league where it was in the top 4. Basically it either churns thru the deck or does tutor chains with its merry band of demons [[Villis]], [[Razaketh]], [[Rune-scarred demon]] and [[Doom Whisperer]] into one of its combos. Best right now are [[Leonin Relic Warder]] w/ [[animate dead]] like effects and sacrifice payoffs like [[mayhem devil]] of the ol dualcaster twinflame combo. Not really spun up on Food chain Korvold but I understand it's probably the best non U food chain deck. Best food chain deck goes to first sliver.
